Desam

Aa laut ja tu oh deewane!
Jahan koi to tujhe apna maane!
(Yeh jo des hai tera, A R Rahman, Javed Akhtar, Swades)

Very subtle way of saying "Dei Kevalamanavane, oottukku thirumbi vaada...inga thaanda unna evanavathu vaazhkaila mathippaan" (Very roughly translated means "Useless bugger, come back home. This is the only place where you will get some kind of respect in life").

I fished around for the lyrics of the Tamil version to figure out the equivalent in there and was really surprised to hear a totally new story...Undhan Desathin just moved a few notches above Yeh jo Des in my playlist! Hats off to Vaalee for thinking on a totally new line!

The Hindi version, if you listen closely, makes no direct reference to India...you can possibly have the song set in (almost) any other country with very minimal modifications. On the other hand, the repeated mention of Thamizhaa does wonders to the impact of the tamil song and the net effect reeks of India, and specifically Tamil Nadu...the best example is these lines:

Gangai unai azhaikirathu
Yamunai unai azhaikirathu
Imayam unai azhaikirathu
Pala samayum unnai azhaikirathu
Kannamoochi aatam azhaika
Chinna pattam poochi kootam azhaika
Thennam thoppu thuravukal azhaika
Katti kaatha uravukal azhaika
Nee thaan thinna nila choru thaan azhaika
You can almost imagine a zoom down to India on the world map, the huge lakes and Himalayas coming into sight first and then zooming in further into the villages and more specifically the greenery and traditions in the villages...beautifully done, with very simple lyrics.

All said and done, this song, in Hindi, Tamil and the awesomely soothing shehnai version, is an all-time classic. God-level.

The tamizh lyrics are definitely better. But I think thalai saying thamizhaa is what takes this version to anOther level.
Acshlly, can use some bits of this song in the sequel to KM that should be one of our future projects. :)

@sudheer: I am also kind of stuck to Swades for the past 3-4 days :) Awesome stuff!

@eV: I think we should thrash out the finer details of our project among ourselves. And I thought you would have liked NaMu to be our lyricist :) And yeah, thalai ille da, Kadavul!
